Very little is known of William Edwards’ life before or after World War II.

He enlisted in the Navy in February, 1942 and after a year of training joined the First Battalion, 24th Marines as a hospital corpsman. Promoted to Pharmacist’s Mate, Second Class on 1 July 1943 while at Camp Pendleton and remained at that rank throughout the war. Edwards saw combat on Roi-Namur, Saipan, and TInian; he was recommended for the Bronze Star Medal following the Marianas campaign, but it is unknown if the decoration was ever awarded.

In early 1945, chosen to remain at Camp Maui with battalion rear echelon and run sick bay with PhM1c Francis B. Munski. Missed participating in battle of Iwo Jima.

Edwards remained on duty with 1/24 through 12 August 1945, at which point he was transferred to Headquarters, FMF Pacific, along with the majority of the battalion’s veteran corpsmen. He was presumably discharged shortly after the end of the war and returned to civilian life.
