Pharmacist’s Mate, Second Class

Pharmacist’s Mate William Edwards joined First Battalion, 24th Marines in the spring of 1943, after completing his training at the Medical Field Service School at Camp Elliott, California. He was promoted to PhM2c shortly after his arrival, and served through three battles with the battalion in the year 1944.

In January 1945, Edwards said goodbye to most of his comrades as they shipped out for the battle of Iwo Jima; he had been chosen to stay behind at Camp Maui as part of the division’s rear echelon. He stayed on the rolls of the battalion through July, 1945.

Little else is known about Edwards’ life, before or after the war.
