William H. Baker joined Company C, 24th Marines on April 10, 1945. He trained with them as a BAR gunner until the war ended that September; he saw no combat before the Japanese surrender.

After his regiment disbanded, Baker joined the 17th Service Battalion to serve out his enlistment. He was discharged in 1946.
