Jimmie Baker was born in Oak City, North Carolina in 1923. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1944 at the age of twenty one.

After training at Parris Island, Private Baker was sent to the 58th Replacement Draft, and then to Company B, 24th Marines as a replacement rifleman. He trained with them at Camp Maui for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. When his regiment disbanded, Baker joined the 9th MP Battalion and traveled to Okinawa to serve as a guard at the newly-constructed naval base on the island. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on November 11, 1946.

Jimmie Baker died in 1993. He is buried in Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, North Carolina.
