Herman Bautch was born and raised in Wisconsin. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in March, 1944, and attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego before being assigned to a service squadron out of San Diego. Bautch served as a “basic” Marine with Service Squadron 42 until about mid-1945, when he was released to attend infantry school. Reclassified as a machine gunner, he joined the 69th Replacement Draft at Camp Pendleton, and was shipped over to Hawaii to join the Fourth Marine Division.

Bautch was assigned to Company B, 24th Marines, and began training with them for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended after he had been with the company for only a few weeks. His newness was evident in the error of a battalion clerk, who misidentified him as “Norman Bautch” on the October, 1945 muster roll.

Although the war was over, Bautch still had to serve out his enlistment. He was assigned to the 17th Service Battalion, and then to the 6th Service Depot in Hawaii, where he worked until honorably discharged as a Private First Class in October, 1946.

After the war, Herman Bautch returned to Wisconsin, settled in Oak Creek, and married Bernice Wiersgalla. He passed away in 1983, at the age of 62.
