George Banegas was the son of George and Angelita Banegas, a laboring family living in Doña Ana county, New Mexico. He grew up in San Ysidro, and may have resided in Las Cruces before the war broke out.

Banegas volunteered to serve with the Marine Corps, and was ordered to active duty on October 27, 1944. After training at Parris Island, he was sent to the 58th Replacement Draft, and then joined Company A, 24th Marines as a replacement rifleman in the summer of 1945.

Private Banegas trained with Company A at Camp Maui for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. Banegas continued to serve after his regiment was disbanded, earning an honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal in 1946.

George Banegas died in El Paso, Texas in 1976. He is buried in Saint Joseph Cemeteries, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
