Civey Baker was born in Harnett County, North Carolina in 1925. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1944 at the age of nineteen.

After training at Parris Island, Private Baker was sent to the 58th Replacement Draft, and then to Company A, 24th Marines as a replacement rifleman. He trained with them at Camp Maui for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he saw any combat. When his regiment disbanded, Baker joined the 9th MP Battalion and traveled to Okinawa to serve as a guard at the newly-constructed naval base on the island. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on December 2, 1946.

Civey Baker returned to North Carolina, where he married and raised a family. He died in 1979, and is buried in Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Angier, NC.
