John Avera was a Georgia boy, born to Charlie and Myrtice Avera of Powersville in 1926. He joined the Marine Corps in October, 1944, days after his seventeenth birthday, trained with the 4th Recruit Battalion at Parris Island, and then traveled across the country with the 59th Replacement Draft.
In the summer of 1945, Private Avera was transferred to the 24th Marine Regiment, and became a BAR gunner with Company A. He trained with them for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he had a chance to see combat. After the war, he served with Headquarters & Service Company, 18th Service Command until being hospitalized in the spring of 1946. Averea was released from the hospital by April, and was discharged by midsummer.
Avera died in Forsyth, Georgia in 2006.
