RICHARDS PORTER LYON
BATTALION SURGEON
NOVEMBER 1944 – SEPTEMBER 1945
These are some of Doc Richards Lyon’s photographs from the war in 1945. An accomplished photographer who carried his camera everywhere except into combat, he nonetheless lost his prized camera to enemy shellfire (when the transport with his baggage was sunk off Iwo Jima) and a hand-made replacement to a sticky-fingered sailor. Doc’s greatest regret was losing the photos he’d taken using that homemade pinhole camera with cadged Marine film.
